CHAPTER ELEVEN

Jesse awoke with a start and realized that both he and Amy had fallen asleep on the swing. He glanced down at her head, still resting against his shoulder.

She looked so peaceful here. The worry about her father, the million and one ranch chores, all were forgotten as she lost herself in sleep.

Careful not to wake her, he reached for the afghan lying at their feet. Drawing it over them, he tucked it around her shoulders.

She sighed and snuggled closer. His pulse did a quick dance. He was fully aroused. The thought of waking her with a slow, easy kiss had the blood pounding in his temples. He had no doubt he could wake the slumbering passion within her while she was still in the throes of sleep.

Though he was sorely tempted, he drew back, watching her. It wouldn’t be fair to take advantage of her in this state. She was exhausted by the burdens she was being forced to carry these days. Besides, though he wanted her desperately, he wanted the decision to be hers alone. If they made love… when they made love, he mentally corrected, he wanted her fully engaged, as eager and hungry as he would be.

This time, he thought with a little frown, there would be no second thoughts. No regrets.

No regrets.

Hadn’t he lived with regret every day since Amy had left Gold Fever without a word?

They would get past that, he vowed, or he’d die trying. He wanted her to want what he wanted.

What he wanted. He sighed and lifted his head to study the path of a shooting star. He knew from his childhood here on the ranch that it wasn’t possible to get everything he wanted in this life. As a boy he’d lost his cousins, who were also his best friends. He’d lost both his parents. And now Coot. Still, he realized that he’d been lucky to have a chance to grow up as he did, surrounded by so many caring people.

Right now, he would give up everything he had for the chance to get back the years he and Amy had lost.

“Jesse.” Amy jerked awake and lifted her head from his shoulder, staring around in confusion.

In that brief instant she’d seen the way he’d been looking at her with a strange, almost haunted look. It was unsettling to realize that he’d been studying her without her knowledge. “How long have I been asleep?”

He glanced at the moon. “Most of the night, I’d say.”

Despite the warmth of the afghan tucked firmly around her, she felt a trickle of ice along her spine at the thought of having spent the night in his arms. “Sorry.”

“I’m not.”

She looked over, expecting him to say more. Instead he continued watching her with that wary look.

“You work so hard all day, Jess. The last thing you need is to spend the night on my porch swing.”

“There’s no place I’d rather be.”

He smiled then, and her heart actually fluttered.

“I should get inside.”

“In a minute.” He closed a hand over hers.
